Homemade Philly Cheesesteak

UK Style

During lockdown we watched a lot of YouTube videos to pass the time. One of our favourite people to watch is Mark Wiens who has been doing tours of different places around the world. Mark was based in America when we started watching his videos. He had created a lot of internal food tours of America covering different types of foods. One of which was a Philly Cheesesteak tour. This lead to me wanting to make my own Homemade Philly Cheesesteak.

We watched this for his Philly Cheesesteak tour of Philadelphia.

Portion Sizes in US

The video above is one of my favourite videos and as a result this made me want to do a Homemade Philly Cheesesteak or go to Philadelphia to taste the subs at all the locations in the video. A proper Philly Cheesesteak.

The UK is not like the US when it comes to food, especially portion sizes, seasoning and many different options they provide for those who love food. America wins hands down.

So, this had me looking at doing the recipe this year. The ingredients include:

  • French Baguette (not part baked – like a proper Subway Sub – for those in the UK)
  • Ribeye Steak
  • Onion (if you like onions)

Pretty simple. Or, so it seems.

Unforeseen Issue

Unfortunately, it appears that none of the grocery stores in Scotland such as Asda, Sainsbury’s, Aldi has the correct baguette used in the videos. I thought I spotted the correct baguette on the Aldi website.

I jumped down to Aldi during lunch and searched the aisles at the bakery. I found the product from the Aldi website but it turned out not to be the bread I was looking for. The unforeseen issue was that they where not the size I imagined. The size should have been about a foot or more but this was the size just above a small hotdog bun.

Saturday

On the Saturday, the day I was making these bad boys, I jumped to our local butcher at the top of Kilbowie Road. I rarely go into a butcher for steak as we normally get this at Costco. The server wrapped up the ribeye steaks (x2 of them) and back home I went.

The size of the ribeye was nothing like the size on the YouTube video. Which again was an unforeseen circumstance. The size of the ribeye steaks actually matched the size of the sub-buns that where not a foot long in size.

Results

Working with what we had, I would say that this attempt was successful as you may see in the video.

The next attempt, I would like to learn to make bread/rolls/subs so that I have a chance of making a foot long Philly Cheesesteak exactly like the restaurants in America, until the day we are able to visit more states in America.
